  25.             NEARnet is a high-speed (up to 10 Mb/s) network of academic,
  26.             industrial,  government, and non-profit organizations in New
  27.             England.  It was established by Boston University,  Harvard,
  28.             and  MIT  late  in  1988;   as of June, 1989, it included 14
  29.             organizations.  NEARnet is operated by BBN Systems and Tech-
  30.             nologies under contract to MIT.

  32.             NEARnet uses the TCP/IP protocol suite and supports  leased-
  33.             line and microwave links at speeds from 9.6 Kb/s to 10 Mb/s.
  34.  
  35.             NEARnet has the goal of creating  a  regional  ``information
  36.             infrastructure''   in  New  England  to  support  education,
  37.             research and development.  Special services and  facilities,
  38.             such  as  the  Connection  Machine  (TM),  the Massachusetts
  39.             Microelectronics  Center,  and  library  catalogs,  will  be
  40.             available over NEARnet.

  42.             NEARnet is linked to the NSFNET backbone via connections  to
  43.             the  John  von Neumann Center network and NYSERnet.  It also
  44.             has a link to the Defense Research Internet.

  46.             _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _A_c_c_e_s_s

  48.             At the discretion of the NEARnet member organization, any IP
  49.             host  at  that  organization  may  access NEARnet.  Hosts on

  68.             hosts;   hosts on many networks can exchange electronic mail
  69.             with NEARnet hosts.

  71.             _W_h_o _C_a_n _U_s_e _t_h_e _N_e_t_w_o_r_k

  73.             Any of the members  may  exchange  traffic  with  any  other
  74.             member for purposes that are consonant with the primary mis-
  75.             sion of NEARnet, the  support  of  education  and  research.
